Lessons From A Polyglot

tim-doner

I found this pretty cool video today of a talk given by Tim Doner. In some reports he is said able to speak in 23 languages. You know what he said about learning language?

“I do it for the fun of it”

“Knowing a language is much more than knowing  a couple of words out of a dictionary”

“I listened to a lot of rap music, I would memorise the lyrics and spit them back out. I try to chat with native speakers once a week, once a month and I found that incrementally I started to understand a lot more”

(Saya banyak dengar rap.

“I’ve got my own community of language learners here in New York. I would go out to outer boroughs, and, for a lack of a better word, embarass myself”

“There is an enormous connection between language and culture, language and thought”

“Language represents a cultural worldview”

(Bahasa melambangkan satu pandangan dunia yang berasaskan budaya)

“You can translate words easily, but you can’t translate meaning”

(Perkataan senang diterjemah, tapi maksud lebih susah)

If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.
